Recently, it has become evident how having two children spaced within 2 years of each other has its challenges and its rewards.
The challenges were mostly experienced within the first year of life of the younger of the two. This is because both children are still very dependent on the parent, and neither can operate on their own quite yet.
The rewards come after that first year. This is mostly because the older of the two, edges on the age of 3 and is more independent than ever before. Additionally, the younger child is likely to become a mirror image of the younger child. They eat the same food, they play with the same toys, and they are interested in the same things. Zayan no longer uses a booster or a high chair because his sister doesn't. He doesn't get in his carseat right away. Summer wants the exact same sippy cup as her brother. She suddenly has an increased fascination with cars and trucks. Zayan has an interest in caring for baby dolls. He wants to use the potty like his sister. They both struggle to ride the same tricycle-- not because we have 56 tricycles in our garage, but because the 1 one of them wants, the other also wants. So, now we're suddenly faced with a situation where we're essentially raising twins. They need to have the same thing. We order 2 identical kids meals at restaurants. We purchase identical toys at the store for each child. Next thing you know, Summer will be dressing in Mater t-shirts and Zayan will be wearing kitty-cat dresses. Well, at least it makes life easier.... and I'm all about easy these days.
